Intent

At Ashby CofE Primary, we are intentional about how we teach literacy skills to the children in our care.  Understanding and application of English is the doorway to success in every other subject.

We are passionate that our pupils leave us with the building blocks for a life-long love of language beyond their primary education and we are relentless in our intent to ensure every child becomes a confident and fluent reader. Learning English is more than that alone: it provides a creative and expressive dimension for pupils to experience. Facilitating fluency in written and spoken English will enable our pupils to clearly communicate their ideas and emotions to others. Being steeped in rich language, children can further develop culturally, spiritually, intellectually and socially.  Our curriculum is:

• inclusive - we ambitiously strive to aid all of our learners to become confident communicators both orally and in written form;
• ambitious - we purposefully use a wide-range of sources for our children to read and to immerse themselves in: allowing them to think deeply about the world they live in as well as make-believe;
• coherently planned - the lessons we sequence allow the children to enjoy the journey and build upon prior knowledge and understanding;
• expressive - we challenge our children to read for pleasure and think about how the written word can be performed, or be read by peers to delight and inspire.
