We are very proud and extremely excited to announce that our school (with a BIG help from Miss Bunn and Mrs McDougall’s Year 1s) has been awarded the RSPB Bronze AND Silver Wild Challenge awards! and a ‘Schools For Nature 2023’ award signed by Sir David Attenborough!
This year the Year 1s in Miss Bunn and Mrs McDougall’s class have been participating in a research project led by the RSPB (the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) to help measure and increase children’s time spent outdoors and to see if this increases children’s connectedness to nature.
Much of the learning that they have undertaken has been linked to the RSPB Wild Challenge activities. These are all based around ‘helping’ nature or ‘experiencing’ nature. The project has required them to interact with the outdoors and nature and subsequently to consider their impact on the environment and vice versa. With all the activities they completed, their help alone meant we were awarded our Bronze Wild Challenge Award.
In addition, we have also been awarded our Silver Wild Challenge Award thanks to the contribution of many other children (across all year groups) who have worked in nature with Mrs Murray this year.
The celebration doesn’t end there! Over the last academic year, we have started to work on making our school grounds a haven for wildlife. We have taken action for nature, and we are helping to protect and restore the UK’s biodiversity. We have demonstrated we care about nature and wildlife by inspiring the next generation of nature champions and completing the RSPB Wild Challenges. Subsequently, we have been awarded a Schools For Nature 2023 certificate signed by Sir David Attenborough!
We'd like to say a huge thanks to Mrs Murray who has been doing an amazing job in developing and planning our Forest school and Outdoor Learning Curriculum. The feedback from the children who have taken part in these sessions has been so positive. This is what some of our Year 3/4 children think:
Millie: "This is the best day I have ever had at school."
Mia: "Cooking in the mud kitchen was great!"
Ivy: "Playing stick wars, Forest School is AMAZING"
