History

Intent

"We are not makers of history; we are made by history."  - Martin Luther King Jr.

Understanding our past helps shape our future.

At Ashby Church of England Primary School we are HISTORIANS!

Our aim is that, through the teaching of history, we inspire pupils’ curiosity and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past. We teach children a sense of chronology, in order to develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage.

Our curriculum is designed to bring history to life, in order to help pupils to understand the process of change as well as understanding their own identity and the challenges of their time. It enables the children to develop their knowledge of the people and events that have shaped the past, at a local level, in Britain and in the Wider World and therefore give them a better understanding of the present.

The history curriculum is planned from the programme of study in the National Curriculum. Lessons are sequenced so that substantive and disciplinary knowledge are gained and built upon, ensuring that children know more, do more, remember more and therefore make progress. We recognise the importance of building the cultural capital of learners and they are given opportunities to develop this through the curriculum, trips and visits.

Our history lessons draw upon the key threads of Hierarchy and Power, Community and Culture, Conflict and Disaster and Exploration and Invention that are woven throughout our curriculum. Children are taught the stories of the past and develop an understanding of how historians work with evidence to construct the past. They also begin to appreciate that there are different versions of the past and understand how these have arisen.

There is also a strong focus on local history so that children have a sense of place and belonging within their community and feel a connection to the place where they live.

Through History, children learn to make comparisons and links between the past and modern times and discover how and why things have changed. We believe that by allowing the children to understand the importance and enjoyment of History through different opportunities, they will become enthused learners in History.
